Building Better Workplaces: Why Mental Health Support Matters

Not every struggle is visible.

Someone can show up to work every day, meet deadlines, attend meetings, and still be carrying an enormous amount of stress.

As leaders, we often talk about physical health.

But mental health is just as important.

I've learned that when people are overwhelmed, burned out, anxious, or emotionally exhausted, it affects every part of their lives.

Their work.

Their relationships.

Their confidence.

Their wellbeing.

For many years, conversations about mental health were often avoided.

People worried about being judged.

They worried that asking for help would be seen as weakness.

I believe we need to change that.

Supporting mental health isn't about lowering standards.

It's about recognizing that people perform at their best when they have the support they need.

That's one reason why mental health benefits matter.

Not because every employee will use them immediately.

But because they know support is available when they need it.

The best workplaces create environments where people can speak openly, ask for help, and take care of themselves without fear.

Because taking care of your mental health isn't a sign of weakness.

It's a sign of self-awareness.

And strong teams are built when people feel safe enough to be honest about what they need.

As leaders, we may not always have all the answers.

But we can create cultures where people know they don't have to struggle alone.

And sometimes, that makes all the difference.

What is one thing you think workplaces can do to better support employee wellbeing?
